Falklands host Economic Development Forum on oil future
The Falkland Islands are set to host the 2026 Economic Development Forum, focusing on the transformative impact of the upcoming Sea Lion Island oil project. The forum, organized by the Falklands Chamber of Commerce and the Falklands Development Corporation (FIDC), will run from April 6 to April 10, 2026, in Stanley.
The Sea Lion Island project is anticipated to significantly boost the local economy over the next 30 to 40 years, with projections of billions in revenue. This development is expected to enhance telecommunications and open new economic avenues previously unexplored in the region.
The forum will feature a series of conferences and workshops addressing key sectors:
- April 6: Exclusive Chamber of Commerce engagement.
- April 7: Economic Development Forum at Harbour Lights Cinema & Events Room.
- April 8: Conservation and Sustainability Workshop.
- April 9: Telecommunications Workshop.
- April 10: Oil and Hydrocarbons Workshop.
Distinguished experts from British Overseas Territories will lead the sessions, including Kathy Smith, President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Dr. Genève Phillip-Durham, Principal Consultant of R.E.A.C.H. Global Consulting; and Targ Patience, Chair of the Gibraltar Association for New Technologies.
The forum aims to prepare the Falkland Islands for the economic transformations associated with the oil industry, ensuring sustainable development and integration of new technologies.
