Brunei's Sultan Reshuffles Cabinet, Appoints Sons

On June 4, 2026, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei announced a significant cabinet reshuffle, introducing new key portfolios and appointing two of his younger sons to ministerial positions. This move is widely viewed as a step towards preparing the next generation of leaders in the oil-rich sultanate.

Key Appointments

In the televised announcement, the Sultan retained his roles as Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and Finance Minister. His second eldest son, Prince Abdul Malik, was appointed as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, marking his first cabinet role. Prince Abdul Mateen, the Sultan's second youngest son, known for his popularity on social media, was appointed as Foreign Minister, a position previously held by the Sultan himself. Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah continues his role as Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.

Structural Changes

The reshuffle also introduced three new ministerial roles aimed at strengthening policy coordination across the government. Additionally, the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism was reorganized into the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The Sultan stated that this restructuring is intended to accelerate the development of priority sectors, strengthen economic diversification efforts, support sustainable economic growth, and create meaningful employment opportunities.

Context and Implications

This cabinet reshuffle is the first since 2022 and comes as Brunei faces challenges from a global energy crisis. It also precedes the Sultan's diamond jubilee, marking 60 years on the throne in 2027. The appointments of his sons to key positions are seen as a strategic move to ensure continuity and stability in Brunei's leadership.
