Canada Enacts Comprehensive Bail and Sentencing Reforms
The Government of Canada has enacted the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act (Bill C-14), introducing over 80 targeted amendments to the Criminal Code. These reforms aim to:
- Implement stricter bail laws and tougher sentencing for repeat and violent offenders.
- Support frontline law enforcement and invest in long-term crime prevention strategies.
- Enhance public safety by ensuring serious crimes receive appropriate punishments.
These changes will come into effect on July 15, 2026, with certain amendments to the Youth Criminal Justice Act to be implemented later.
